Wolfenstein 3D
Wolfenstein 3D (commonly abbreviated as Wolf3D) is a shooter first person to popularize the genre for PC. It was created by Id Software and distributed by Apogee Software in May 1992. You can say that this game was the pioneer of the genre and quite popular today, and followed by others as important as Doom and Quake. The game has been taken to other systems like 3DO, SNES, Game Boy Advance and even the Spectrum.
Description
The player is William J. Blazkowicz, an American spy trying to escape from the fortress which Nazi prisoner. This fortress is full of armed guards and trained dogs to attack. The building has a large number of secret rooms containing various treasures, food rations and first aid kits, as well as different types of weapons and ammunition, all of which help the player achieve their goal.
Wolfstein 3D was released as shareware, which allowed it to be widely copied. The shareware version contains an episode, which consisted of 10 missions (levels). The commercial launch was in three episodes including the shareware, and an expansion called "The Nocturnal Missions". Like the shareware episode, each episode of the retail version has 10 levels, completing a total of 60 missions in the game.
The episodes are:
* The Original Trilogy:
1. "Escape from Wolfenstein" (shareware episode)
2. "Operation: Eisenfaust"
3. "Die, Führer, Die"
* The Nocturnal Missions:
1. "A Dark Secret"
2. "Trail of the Madman"
3. "Confrontation"
Each episode has a different boss who must defeat the end of the mission to complete. Must be completed only 9 of the 10 missions, hiding in one of the first eight tasks include an entry to the tenth, the secret level. The secret level of the third episode recreated one of the levels of Pac-Man, the ghosts that could be seen from the perspective of Pac-Man.
NOTE: This game brings the original trilogy and "The Nocturnal Missions"
Enemies
Guards - A standard German soldier with a gun and wearing a brown uniform. Can usually be eliminated with one or two bullets, and have relatively slow reaction times. Dog
- A German shepherd attack. Unlike soldiers, who are often static in one place when they are found, the dogs are always running. Enemies are weaker, since they have a range of attack and can always be eliminated by a single bullet. His only strength is speed.
Waffen SS - Soldier bulkier blue uniform, a MP40 (SMG) and a bulletproof vest. Your reaction time is not as good, but are more accurate and deadly than the guards with their weapons. Mutant
- Also known as 'Zombie Lanza-Knives', is a Frankenstein-like creature in a dark purple uniform, brandishing a pair of knives and a gun held by a hand emerging from his chest. They do not move faster than the guards but their reaction time is instant and remain silent when they detect an enemy instead of giving the cry of alarm. Shoot much faster, and are quite difficult to remove. Only appear in Operation: Eisenfaust and the secret level in Episode 6. Official
- Member of an elite Nazi unit, wearing a white uniform and guns as regular soldiers. They are almost as powerful as the Mutants, and also are faster. Appear only in the last four episodes.
Heads
the end of each episode on the ninth floor, the player must face a boss enemy. Unlike the normal enemies, the bosses only drawn at an angle instead of eight, and so the player can not surprise or sneak up on them. The heads are also deaf, and will not notice your presence or activity will take less than you see. When a chief dies, it displays the phrase "Let's See That Again" ("Look at it again" is displayed on the screen, and shows a repetition of the death of the chief and the episode ends. In the Macintosh version, all heads (except for Adolf Hitler, who is the final boss) show gold keys which open a door at the end of the level.
Hans Grosse - A giant Nazi superman who cares output Castle Wolfenstein. is the brother Gretel. Take two big guns. Unlike other leaders, not shown a deathcam when they die. Instead, casts a golden key. The player uses the key to unlock a door, where we see BJ Blazkowicz after escaping the castle.
Dr. Schabbs - The doctor behind the creation of the army of mutants used by Hitler. Unlike other enemies, is equipped with syringes that can remove 25% of the player's health. If the player dies in his hands, the face where the state is turning gray and without emotion, as one of its mutants. False Hitler
- A true follower of Hitler. It is not really a boss but is stronger than other enemies, and is only drawn at an angle. Has a flamethrower in his chest. Only appear in Episode 3, Floor 9, guarding the secret bunker of Hitler.
Adolf Hitler - The leader of the Nazi regime, first appears with a robotic armor carrying four machine guns. When the suit is destroyed, kept two guns. Otto
Giftmacher - The creator of poisons after chemical warfare. Attacked with a rocket launcher. Gretel Grosse
- is the sister of Hans Grosse, and cares for the room key with maps. Has a double machine gun. As Hans does not appear, and throws a wrench deathcam.
General
Fettgesicht - The top general in the chemical assault against the Allies. It is the ultimate enemy of Nocturnal Missions, and carries a machine gun and rocket launcher.
Controversy
Due to the use of Nazi symbols and the Horst Wessel Song (Hymn of the Nazi party) as a central theme of the game, the PC version was banned in Germany in 1994, as this country, the use of such symbols is considered a federal offense, unless circumstances warrant.
Due to concerns from Nintendo, the SNES version of the game was modified to not include any reference to Nazism, and even the dogs was changed by giant rats, and blood was converted into a sweat with the purpose of making the game seem less violent.
Aftermath
* "Spear of Destiny" appeared as a prequel to this great game in September 1992, which had many more levels and new enemies, but gameplay and graphics equal to those of Wolfenstein 3D.
"Return to Castle Wolfenstein" was published in 2001, the third part of the classic game. The gameplay and scenario are quite similar to the original, buts graphics and audio were an improvement because of the Quake III engine engine. RTCW begins like the first game, but since then the two stories diverge. In general, RTCW save a little like its predecessor beyond the title and setting. However, players have access to a replica of the game's interface in the bottom of the screen if activated 'cg_uselessnostalgia' through the game console. The version for [[] Xbox]] has emulated the full version of Wolfenstein 3D as a bonus for completing the game.
"Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory" is the game that followed RTCW and was published in 2003. It is freeware and exclusively for multiplayer.
also announced a new version Castle Wolfenstein for Windows and Xbox 360.
Legacy
generally credited with Wolfenstein 3D is responsible for initiating the fashion of the games first-person shooter, but surprisingly there were not many clones of it until the release of Doom in 1993.
The game's success helped id Software quickly became a developer of high profile. His following products were closely followed by fans of the game, and when he published his next set of first-person shooter, Doom, had secured an audience quite receptive. However, instead of depend on the technology that made a success of Wolfenstein, Doom introduced many technological advances in comparison to Wolfenstein 3D. Some of these developments were a higher level of detail in the levels and characters, improved animation and a multiplayer mode. Wolfenstein later be recreated on a modified Doom II called WolfenDoom.
